Why I write YA

Published 11/01/2013 by Lily Crussell

For some reason, I’ve been asked this three or four times this week which is spooky as I haven’t been asked in ages, so I figured a blog post was called for.

I read YA fiction. That is the main reason. I hate ‘age appropriate’ books. I’m 29 and apparently that means I just want to read about people clothes shopping, getting drunk and sleeping with everyone in a five metre radius. None of those things interest me. I read to experience something different – to leave reality at the door! That’s not to say I don’t read some adult books; The Game of Thrones Series, Stephen King and The Walking Dead books, but generally most books aimed at my demographic think I’m brainless and shallow. I don’t want pages describing the lead’s shoes or the designers that have work scattered all over her apartment. I couldn’t care less about any of that. Also the relationships are rarely lasting or deep.

Teen fiction is more interesting to me because I think it has more heart. My favourite books tend to be YA; The Hunger Games among others. They have everything I want; adventure, real romance, genuine feelings, paranormal aspects, magic, mythical creatures… I know there are adult books with these elements, but they’re usually based on porn detail sex scenes which I don’t want to read about. I don’t care how many martinis they had that night, it doesn’t interest me. I picked up an adult book by an author who also writes Teen and was so disappointed. It was almost identical (down to the slang used etc) but had (pointless) sex scenes inserted. They didn’t add anything or have any real point. I ditched it half way through.

Anyhoo, they say to write what you know, and I know YA. I love it and it resonates with me more than anything writing for my age group.
