So excited!

Published 28/03/2012 by Lily Crussell

Slightly off topic, but I’m off to see The Hunger Games today! Whoop whoop! Very excited! I’m hoping it’s not too different from the books as I hate it when movie adaptations are completely different.

From what I’ve seen, the trailer isn’t really anything like I thought it would be, for a start, District 12 looks too clean! In the books, they constantly mention the coal dust that gets into everything, but the place looks immaculate! Haymitch being played by Woody Harrelson is an odd choice. I expected someone older and more grumpy. Woody Harrelson usually plays ‘nice guy’ roles. Cinna is obviously played by someone quite a bit older, but I think Lenny Kravitz is an inspired choice. Katniss looks great, but Peeta doesn’t look how I expected him too, not sure why. Donald Sutherland as Snow is another odd choice, he’s a popular actor and Snow is universally hated.

Anyhoo, that was a bit random, but things are quite quiet my end. Between making a thousand bookmarks and not having the inspiration to write at the mo, I’m a bit annoyed with myself. Hopefully a trip to the cinema will help things along!

Guerilla Advertising

Published 26/03/2012 by Lily Crussell

Ok, I’m no expert. Whenever I go to my local library, they now follow me around as though I am acting suspiciously. Why? Probably because I am acting suspiciously. Let me explain;

Book promotion is a nightmare. Not least when you don’t have a physical thing you can show people. I have made no end of bookmarks and spent a small fortune on promotional bits from vistaprint. But none of that stuff gives itself out. As a noob to all this, and someone who figured an expert would deal with promotion ‘when’ she got a book deal, I find the whole thing mind blowing.

I go into my local library and stick my bookmarks in teen fiction. I take out ten+ books at a time, then return them within 24 hours with my promotional bits in them. I must state; I don’t do anything that would damage or change the books! I haven’t been caught…yet, but every time I go in there, I feel guilty. In the big scale of things, putting a few bookmarks in a few books seriously isn;t a big deal, but I think the fact that I act so guiltily every time I go in there makes them suspicious!

I have been known to sneakily put small stacks of my bookmarks with the pamphlets of petting zoos, takeaways, backs of toilet doors (captive audience) and just about anywhere I think I can get away with. I have gone door to door putting info through letter boxes. This last one I wouldn’t recommend.

I have contacted my old school for help (they didn’t even reply to my email) and I’ve begged, bribed and harassed no end of people to get my book seen…and it hasn’t really gotten me anywhere.

What’s my point? I suppose I’m trying to warn all you newbies about what is involved. You have to fight, tooth and claw to get your work seen. You have to have no pride, no shame and be willing to jump on every chance there is. Use any connections you may have. And most of all; Be willing to help out others. Giveaways are hard work for the people organising them, and if someone is kind enough to involve you, ensure you show your appreciation! Advertise their page, their group and acknowledge their kindness.

Writing is a dog eat dog world, but I don’t think it needs to be. Kindness is one thing this world could always do with more of!

Press Release

Published 23/03/2012 by Lily Crussell

I honestly don’t think there is anything weirder than writing about yourself from another person’s perspective. I have just written my first press release, and it is all written as if my agent/PR wrote it. Very odd to read back on. It’s hard to promote yourself without sounded arrogant and I really struggle to do it. Fifteen lines of ‘I rock’ don’t cut it and there’s only so many times you can say ‘exciting, thrilling’ etc.

Hopefully one day I will have someone who can do that for me as I just find it cringe inducing. Self promotion is essential for authors, but it’s something I really struggle with. So for all you newbies out there, practice telling yourself how talented and wonderful you are, because confidence sells, and if you don’t believe in yourself, why would anyone else?

On a side note, I am actually waaaaaaaaaaaay too excited about the Hunger Games! Might go on Wednesday as I hate packed cinemas. Let me all know what you thought of it! I can’t wait! Are you Team Gale or Team Peeta? I’m Team Gale all the way!

I am actually sat at my laptop, ready to write. This is something that hasn’t happened for a LONG time, so I was quite excited…until the neighbours started building work in their yard! Argh! This is so typical!

Unfortunately, the sun is shining for one of the first times this year in the UK, so everyone has gone a bit mental. Lawnmowers are out, shorts are everywhere and everyone is wearing flipflops. I even have an excuse to eat ice cream! Yay! The problem is, good weather = lots of noise!

We need silent mowers, silent builders, silent music or at least a room that is sound proofed enough so that the world could be ending outside and I wouldn’t even know! Don’t get me wrong! I love the weather, it’s gorgeous, but it’s been so long since I actually felt inspired, that I’m a little cross that I now can’t concentrate as there is so much blooming noise! I have music playing quietly to my right, and to my left BANG BANG BANG BANG!  ‘OI! PASS ME THE *BLEEP* HAMMER!’ Ah! I love it here lol.

How do all you other writers cope with distractions?

Kindness and Generosity

Published 19/03/2012 by Lily Crussell

I first put my e-book on Amazon in Dec. I had no idea how to promote it or get people to visit it. I’m sure anyone who is a newbie author feels the same way, it can be a very lonely, time consuming practice.

That is until some wonderfully generous people contacted me about giveaways! I had to work my behind off to get even one person to follow me on Twitter or FB, now I’m getting tonnes a day and it’s all thanks to the lovely people running the giveaways!/EasterBunnyBookHop

Please go support them as there are a lot of great prizes up for grabs. Their hardwork and generosity has made my week!

Thanks again Ladies
