Need cheering up

Published 26/12/2011 by Lily Crussell

After the worst Christmas of my life (you don’t want to know) I am feeling pretty rubbish. I haven’t written anything of any use in days which isn’t helping my mood and I don’t know what to do with myself.

I’m up to 351 d/l on amazon, which is good, but if you think of it in terms of how mnay people are on the earth…well, it’s not much really is it? It’s free for another 2 days so take advantage

I will admit to not being the biggest fan of this holiday. It’s nothing to do with my beliefs, it’s more to do with the way that it has become so comercial. It’s built up into something that it can never live up to and ultimately people are left disappointed. I’m not in the best mood as the house is freezing! I got some wonderful gifts and got to spend time with my family which is what it is really about. (That and eating inappropriate things for breakfast) I hope you’re all having a great day and have a wonderful new year also.

If you were lucky enough to get a kindle, why not d/l my e-book. It’s free for the next four days! Whoop whoop!

I should have added the ‘OMG EXCITED’ Kitten again for this post. I am a best selling author! OK, maybe not bestselling (71 downloads to date) and selling….it’s currently free! But I don’t care! I’m thrilled to have that many downloads so it would be great if you all could tell your friends if they have kindles or Kindle for PC as it is free for five days and it would be great to hear what you all think about it (good or bad) So spread the word! I’m working on some fun promotional bits and pieces at the moment so will be having giveaways in the future, so keep an eye on this blog! I’m thinking bookmarks and all kinds of cute and fun things. Any ideas? Let me know what you’d like to see!

Sooooo excited I’m having a hot chocolate to celebrate! xxxx

Ok, I’m not a big fan of ranting blogs, but I am not a happy bunny today.

First off, we have a competition I was going to enter, see the article about it here;

Essentially, Penguin and Amazon have been running a comp for a few years to put new authors in print. Sounds good huh? It’s not. The contract is a joke and I find it insane that anyone is expected to sign their rights away like that! The article is a great warning for anyone thinking of entering, I myself will not be after reading that! I would encourage anyone else to think carefully about it before they do.

Obviously at the end of the day it’s the individual’s choice, but read the fine print. Would you be satisfied with your work and rights being treated in that way?

Secondly, that awful person from Jersey Shore now has a book out. It’s getting seriously old finding out that people who have never had any interest in getting a book published are having book deals thrown at them. Some of us have been killing ourselves for years and aren’t even close to the position they find themselves in. I can pretty much predict the content of the book; she describes her wardrobe, nights out and drinking binges. There can’t be any more to it than that as that is what she is promoted as. But its the public that spends its hard earned cash on these types of book that causes this to happen. If you are an author, please think about what isng to the industry before purchasing those ‘celebrity’ books. You know you’ll be donating them to a charity shop in a couple of months anyway.

I hate being ranty, but it really, really aggregates me when I am trying so hard with my work to find that people are HANDED book deals who couldn’t care less and just want the money!

Books for Noobs

Published 21/12/2011 by Lily Crussell

I have read no end of books on writing, publishing etc etc and thought I’d spare you wasting all your hard earned cash by recommending a few. If there are some not listed that you think should be, it’s probably because I haven’t read them or didn’t find them helpful;

Some writers deserve to starve – Elaura Niles. I’m biased as her first name is the same as in my Nephilim series (though a different spelling) This book is an interesting read, but I didn’t find it that useful. Maybe buy second hand or borrow? It’s a fun, quick read, but I didn’t find much info that I could actually use, though there are some good examples of query letters.

Children’s Writers and Artists Yearbook – I think this is invaluable to anyone wanting to break into getting a YA book published, if only for the lists of agents, what they are looking for and extensive lists of publishers too. I personally prefer C W &I Market, but as it is aimed at an American audience, the agent info etc isn’t much use.

Get Known Before the Book Deal – Christina Katz – Not finished yet.

Beginning Writer’s Answer Book – Get the most up to date version of this. A lot of questions answered that I never even thought to ask. Very useful.

Writing and Selling the YA Novel – Not read yet.

How to write a damn good novel – James N Frey – I haven’t finished this, but it instantly put my back up with its advice to people to want to be authors; Quit your job and write. If only this were actually an option! I would love nothing more than to tell my boss where to stick his rubbish, underpaid retail job, but unfortunately I have bills to pay, rent and need to eat occassionally. Don’t ever listen to anyone who dispenses this advice!
